Vegetables, fruit and flowers dominate cargo flows
Maastricht Aachen Airport recorded the highest cargo volume of 2025 in November: 4,202 tonnes. As a result, air cargo grew by 25% in the first 11 months of this year compared to the same period in 2024, increasing from 26,683 to 37,059 tonnes.
At the end of 2024, Maastricht Aachen Airport announced its strategic focus on air cargo. In the long term, the business case is based on 500,000 passengers and 200,000 tonnes of cargo. Both are important for the airport; however, the airport expects air cargo to deliver higher and faster returns compared to passenger traffic. This focus is now clearly reflected in the rising cargo volume figures in 2025.
Dean Boljuncic, Head of Commercial Development at Maastricht Aachen Airport:
‘Several new airlines became acquainted with our airport this year. In addition, existing customers have further expanded their operations. This is recognition for the entire team: over the past year we have been more present in the market than ever before and introduced customers to our excellent handling capabilities, even on extremely busy days as a result of strikes in Belgium. The cooperation with Schiphol has also contributed to our visibility in the market. The foundation is in place to continue this positive development in the cargo segment next year.’
Vegetables, fruit and flowers
A large share of the goods entering Europe via MST consists of vegetables, fruit and flowers. Products that require fast and accurate handling. Boljuncic: ‘The handling of these goods is a mark of quality for the airport. If you can handle these products quickly and properly, without any loss of quality, then you can handle anything.’
Passengers
Passenger numbers are lagging behind those of 2024: during the first eleven months of 2025, 155,061 passengers travelled via Maastricht Aachen Airport. Over the same period in 2024, this figure stood at 225,844. With the start of Wizz Air operations, the airport expects passenger numbers to increase again in 2026.
